CO-FUSION - Heigo DJ Wada and Heigo Tani met whilst working in the discoteques of Tokyo in the early 1980s. Their friendship grew very quickly as they shared a common fascination - the 'art' of DJing. While most DJs at that time were content to merely play one record after another and use the microphone to 'mc' in between, Wada and Tani were investigating the potential of 'mixing' their records together to create new grooves and textures. While Tani had been learning how to program and produce music, Wada, who had started DJing for fun was beginning to attract more and more recognition for his sense of groove and DJ style, and by the early '90s had established a career in DJing. They released their first record 'Jungler-Grey' themselves around the time that House music was finding it's way into Japan and overseas releases followed shortly after, recording under the name of Atom for Tribal Records in the USA and Plastic City in Germany. Their worldwide reputation was also enhanced further by DJ Wada supporting The Orb's first visit to Japan. Sublime Records' relationship with Wada and Tani began in 1994 when Manabu Yamazaki invited them to play as resident DJs at his new club, 'Sublime'. The Co-Fusion project soon got under way with 2 early EP releases on the Sublime imprint Reel Musiq - 'Frontier' and 'Diretta'. A collaboration with Ken Ishii, (under his Flare alias), on Reel Musiq and a remix for the Flare album 'Re-grip' on Sublime followed as well as tracks appearing on various compilations including 'Sublime - The Adolescence' and 'Pacific State' on Volume/Sony. 1998 saw the duo hit the world stage both as producers and performers. The long-awaited debut album ‘Co-Fu’ earned rave reviews across Asia, Europe and the US for it’s thoroughly unique genre mashing sounds, while the live show hit the spot as far afield as Copenhagen, Stockholm, Seoul, Berlin, London, Liverpool(Cream) and Sonar 98 in Barcelona. The year ended on a high with a sell-out Japan tour culminating in an unforgettable ‘home-town’ show at the world renowned Liquid Room - 2000 screaming fans and a host of Japanese TV networks there for the nation’s new super-group! In 1999, more live shows in Europe, Asia and the US, releases featuring some of the world’s finest electronic artists on remix duties, numerous cover-features already in Japanese music and fashion press and even a collaboration on Ken Ishii’s R&S release. The 2nd album, ‘Co-Fu 2’ will be released soon…….. prepare yourselves!!! |
